 SHORT BIO:

Fusing elements of folk, jazz, bluegrass, and rock n roll, Steep Ravine continues to enthrall audiences with their soulful California sound. Songwriter Simon Linsteadt (guitar, lead vocals) and Jan Purat (violin, vocals) began playing music together in high school in Northern California, later moving on to study music at UC Santa Cruz and the California Jazz Conservatory. They met bassist Alex Bice (bass, vocals) through jam sessions in Santa Cruz. Percussionist Jeff Wilson, a close musical compadre, is the band’s most recent addition. Steep Ravine has toured extensively throughout the country and has released two full-length records of original music.

Following their humble beginnings playing at a Hawaiian barbecue spot in Santa Cruz and busking in the BART Metro Stations of San Francisco, Steep Ravine quickly gained a following in the Bay Area and throughout the west. After the release of their debut record Tramping’ On, the band went on several national tours, including notable performances at High Sierra Music Festival, Four Corners Folk Festival, Pagosa Folk n' Bluegrass, Outside Lands, and Strawberry Music Festival. In 2015, Steep Ravine released their second record The Pedestrian, diving deeper into new musical terrain. Steep Ravine’s third album, Turning Of The Fall will be released in North America in the Spring of 2017.

SOME KIND WORDS:

…an entirely new approach to roots music.”
     - John Apice/No Depression (7.27.15 - album review) - http://nodepression.com/album-review/steep-ravine-–-pedestrian

“…another beautiful album full of elegant songs played with a consummate musicianship, style and no small amount of grace.”
     - Paul Liberatore/Marin Independent Journal (6.18.15) - http://www.marinij.com/arts-and-entertainment/20150618/press-play-nothing-pedestrian-about-steep-ravines-latest

“…eschewing the earnestness of folk and sacrificing the strictures of jazz for a broader sound that doesn’t color inside the lines.  They can pick, swing, and groove in whatever way the muse moves them."

“…a more mature sound that progresses the band to another level.  The songwriting skills are more polished, the tightly crafted tunes are awash with catchy hooks, lucious melodies, tight harmonies and intricate string-work.  Taken together, that makes The Pedestrian an album you really should hear."
     - Tom Franks/Folk Words (6.2.15) - http://www.folkwords.com/folkwordsreviews_94294.html

“…the band’s influences come to a head in an intoxicating, magical and glorious piece of explorative roots music that leaves you spinning.  Americana, roots, folk, bluegrass, jazz and even classical make their presence known."
     - Vickye/For The Country Record (6.2.15 - album review) - http://forthecountryrecord.com/2015/06/02/song-premiere-steep-ravine-grenadine/

“…once they pick up their instruments, it’s clear they’re very serious musicians, equal parts jazz combo, bluegrass pickers and emotive songwriters, as well as respectful students of classical form and lineage, who know they’re onto a good thing.”
     - Deborah Crooks/No Depression (live review) 12.14.15 - http://nodepression.com/live-review/steep-ravines-right-angle

"Built on a solid foundation of gifted songwriting, fine singing, and acoustic string dexterity,
[Steep Ravine] may well be opening up a whole new stylistic direction for musicians and
 listeners alike to follow.”
     - Bluegrass Unlimited (6.1.14) - http://bluegrassmusic.com/content/2014/reviews/steep-ravine-trampin/
